Metal roofing

Metal roofs for houses, shops and barns.

Metal sheds snow, stands up to wind and lasts for decades. We install standing seam on homes and exposed-fastener panels on shops and outbuildings, and plan where the snow will go.

Two kinds of metal roof

Standing seam

Panels lock together at raised seams with hidden clips, so there are no exposed screws to back out. The best choice for homes and anything you want to last.

  • Hidden fasteners, room for the metal to expand and contract
  • Clean lines that suit modern and farmhouse styles
  • Higher upfront cost

Exposed fastener

Ribbed panels screwed straight through to the purlins. Practical and affordable for shops, barns, carports and outbuildings.

  • Lower cost and quicker to install
  • Screws need checking and re-tightening over the years
  • Common on farm buildings around Rigby and Rexburg

Plan for the snow slide.

Metal sheds snow in sheets. We map doors, walkways, decks and gas meters before the install and add snow guards where a slide could do damage.

  • Snow guards above entries, decks and lower roofs
  • Heavier-gauge panels and closer clip spacing where the snow load calls for it
  • Underlayment rated for the heat under metal in summer
  • Matching trim, flashing and ridge vent

Metal roofing questions

Comparing with shingles? See roof replacement.

Is a metal roof loud when it rains?

On a house with solid decking, underlayment and attic insulation, it sounds much like any other roof. Open-frame shops and barns are louder, because there is nothing between the panels and the room.

Can metal go over my existing shingles?

Sometimes, on outbuildings, if the deck is sound. On homes we usually recommend tearing off, so the deck can be checked and ice and water shield installed at the eaves.

Does a metal roof attract lightning?

No. Metal doesn't make a strike more likely, and because it doesn't burn it is a safe roof if lightning does hit.
